Residents have benefited from a boost in security surveillance thanks to a grant of $187,610 from the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants Programme.

The grant funded the addition of four overt mobile tower CCTV units in Bennett Springs, Beechboro, Ellenbrook, Malaga and Lockridge, adding to the City of Swan’s existing CCTV system and network of cameras.

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the addition of mobile CCTV units provided the City with greater capability to assist local police to collect evidence of criminal activity for post-incident investigations and target anti-social behaviour hot spots.

“As one of the fastest growing local government areas in the Perth metropolitan area, one of the myriad challenges we face with an increasing population is community safety,” Mayor Lucas said.

“It’s a key priority in the City’s Strategic Community Plan and our CCTV network is a key piece of the puzzle in how we provide a safe and secure neighbourhood for our community.”

Pearce Ward Councillor Aaron Bowman said the City worked in consultation with local police to identify priority areas to address anti-social behaviour.

“CCTV footage not only helps identify and prosecute offenders, the presence of cameras also acts as a deterrent to prevent crime, anti-social behaviour, hooning and illegal dumping, and protects community facilities,” Cr Bowman said.

Federal Member for Hasluck the Hon. Ken Wyatt AM MP said improving surveillance technology was a positive step to reducing crime and anti-social activities in our neighbourhoods.

“The Morrison government’s most recent investment in mobile CCTV infrastructure builds on our previous work with the City of Swan to develop world-class security systems to keep local families, children and residents safe,” Minister Wyatt said.

“I congratulate the City of Swan for their proactive approach to local security, which will detect and deter crimes in the area.

“This forms part of our plan to build a stronger, more resilient community.”
