Senior Barrister appointed to Supreme Court

  • Marcus Solomon SC appointed a judge of the Supreme Court
  • Barrister and educator will take up his position on August 4, 2021
  • Attorney General John Quigley is pleased to announce the appointment of Marcus Solomon SC as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

    Mr Solomon is a barrister and legal educator who has expertise in a wide range of commercial matters.

    He is a member of the Legal Practice Board and has taught advocacy to junior barristers for the Australian Bar Association and the Western Australian Bar Association.

    He graduated from law at the University of Western Australia with First Class Honours in 1991, working as a solicitor and then a partner at two major law firms before moving to the independent Bar.

    He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2013.

    Mr Solomon has acted in complex commercial matters which include property, contracts, insolvency, building and construction, planning and trade practices.

    He has conducted matters in all superior Courts and in local and international arbitrations where he has acted as both counsel and as arbitrator.

    Mr Solomon has provided extensive pro-bono legal advice to community groups and to legal practitioners before the Legal Practitioners Complaints Committee and the State Administrative Tribunal.

    He is an ordained Rabbi who holds leadership positions within the Jewish community and established the Beit Midrash of WA, a Jewish educational institution, in 1993.

    As stated by Attorney General John Quigley:

    “It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Mr Solomon to the bench of the Supreme Court.

    “Mr Solomon, who was until recently the co-ordinator of the Western Australian Bar Association’s continuing professional development program, has a long-standing commitment to legal governance, substantive law, ethics and mastery of professional practice.  

    “He is not only an eminently qualified advocate and lawyer but he has also demonstrated his commitment to public service through his roles in the education and mentoring of his fellow practitioners, membership of various boards and committees, and his advisory and honorary positions in a variety of Jewish educational institutions. 

    “I congratulate Mr Solomon SC on his appointment and wish him well in his new role.”
