Seniors Week set to celebrate contributions of older Western Australians

  • WA Seniors Week 2018 begins today and runs until Saturday, November 17
  • WA Seniors Awards, Have a Go Day and local seniors events held in communities throughout WA this week

Seniors and Ageing Minister Mick Murray is encouraging people of all ages to celebrate the contributions of older people during Seniors Week 2018, which begins today (November 11) and culminates with the WA Seniors Awards on Saturday, November 17.

Some of Western Australia’s most remarkable and dedicated seniors will be honoured at the WA Seniors Awards, with the Juniper Lifetime Achievement award being presented to a metropolitan and a regional winner for their contributions to the community.

This year also sees the return of awards which celebrate businesses and local governments dedicated to making their operations more age-friendly.

Long-running seniors event Have a Go Day will be held this Wednesday, November 14 at Burswood Park, encouraging community participation and active ageing while challenging stereotypes about getting older.

Have a Go Day attracts about 15,000 people and will have up to 230 stalls this year, including hobby, health, fitness and entertainment stands.

The State Government has provided more than $80,000 through the Seniors Week Community Grants program to enable local organisations across the State to hold seniors events in their communities.

As stated by Seniors and Ageing Minister Mick Murray:

“Seniors Week highlights and acknowledges the valuable contributions older Western Australians make to our community and the importance of ensuring their knowledge, skills and experiences are shared with the wider community.

“I urge all Western Australians to find out how seniors are being celebrated in their local communities through the Seniors Week Community Grants program and get involved.

“Events such as Have a Go Day also offer important information for healthy ageing and show Western Australians that there are more activities, hobbies and events available for older people than ever before.

“It is so important that we work to ensure every Western Australian gets the opportunity to age well and feel valued, and Seniors Week is a time for everyone to take a moment to recognise the importance of older people in their lives.”
