Police can confirm one person has died following the serious crash on State Highway 30, Tikitere, near Rotorua.
Another person has been transported to Rotorua Hospital in a serious condition.
The Serious Crash Unit will examine the scene.
The road is closed and is expected to remain so for some time.
Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
