North Coast’s top State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers were recognised at an awards ceremony to officially launch SES Week today.
Minister Ryan said SES Week recognised SES members, groups and units who provided outstanding service to their community in times of need.
“The Queensland SES has a proud history of helping, protecting and educating our communities,” Mr Ryan said.
“Whether it’s first aid, flood boat operation, technical rescue or land search, SES volunteers can often be the difference between life and death.
“SES Week is an important event in our calendar, as we honour the hard work and outstanding efforts of staff and volunteers across Queensland.
“To back our SES, the government has increased its funding commitment this year by over seven percent bringing it to record levels.
“We will continue to support the SES now and into the future.”
As part of the ceremony, Deputy Commissioner Wassing presented a number of awards and joined the Minister in handing over a new flood boat and two trailers to SES Groups in the region.
“Awards given today include the National Emergency Medals and Clasps, the National Medals and Claps, and the SES Meritorious Service Medal and Clasps,” Mr Wassing said.
“It’s the dedication and selfless commitment of people like these that enable QFES to provide a service a community can depend on.”
Howard SES Group received a new flood boat valued at more than $94,000, and Moore Park SES Group received a new single axle, partially enclosed trailer, worth almost $22,000.
“It is always exciting to see our volunteers receive new equipment, and this equipment will ensure our volunteers can continue to support their communities,” Mr Wassing said.
“To those thinking of volunteering with QFES, I encourage them to take the next step and enquire what role may be suitable for them.
“I thank all SES members for helping their communities get back on their feet.”
Suncorp CEO Steve Johnson said they are proud to be the Principal Community Partner of the Queensland SES.
“SES volunteers are a vital part of the community, particularly when the storms come or when people need search and rescue, and they do so much more supporting communities in many ways.

SES Week 2021 runs from 9 to 17 October and is a state-wide celebration to highlight the service SES volunteers provide to Queensland communities.
The SES has approximately 6000 volunteers who perform a diverse range of functions when responding to local, state and national emergencies.
