Shifting Gears On Special Interest Number Plates

Liberal Tasmania
  • Michael Ferguson Deputy Premier, Treasurer, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Minister for Planning, Member for Bass
  • A re-elected majority Rockliff Liberal Government has a 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s future and will take further action to help classic car lovers enjoy their special vehicles even more.

Currently, owners of the 8,770 vehicles registered under the Special Interest (SI) Scheme are required to display black and white SI number plates.

A re-elected majority Rockliff Liberal Government will allow these vehicles to display personalised number plates, still signifying SI, recognising their pride and joy.

Permitting special interest car owners to display personalised number plates has been a long-held desire of classic car enthusiasts. This move will allow them to give a unique, individual touch to their pride and joy.

In addition, we will develop a commemorative log book, enhancing the design of the current log book required to record details of special interest vehicle journeys for compliance purposes. We will seek input from car enthusiast clubs and other stakeholders.

The SI Vehicle Scheme is a conditional registration option that caters for three specific vehicle categories, is subject to operator and vehicle eligibility criteria, and specific conditions of use. A key feature of the SI Scheme is the reduced MAIB premium and exemption from motor tax and payment of the Road Safety Levy afforded to vehicle enthusiasts.

A re-elected majority Rockliff Liberal Government will also act to clarify certain guidelines regarding the condition of SI vehicles. To be registered under class A, an SI vehicle must be in good condition aesthetically and mechanically, maintained to a high quality and structurally sound. They can be in original, restored or modified condition.
