World renowned street artist Smug will start work on the Horsham silo art project before the end of April.
Also known as ‘Sam Bates’, he will transform Horsham’s former silo and flour mill on Hazel Street, as a tribute to former Wotjobaluk warrior Yanggendyinanyuk.
Originally from New South Wales, Smug now lives in Scotland and has recently visited Horsham to meet with the project’s key stakeholders and visit the silos.
He is currently in Australia for a short period, with the Horsham start date brought forward to accommodate his travel arrangements.
The ‘Yangga Dyata’ – Walking on Country project will be completed for National Reconciliation Week at the end of May.
Traffic management, parking and other amenity works will occur during the coming months.
Yanggendyinanyuk is most noted for finding the Cooper-Duff children lost in the Wimmera scrub for nine days in 1864. Other notable stories from his life will be portrayed in the silo artwork.
During his time in Horsham, Bates will mentor Gunditjmara and Wotjobaluk artist Tanisha Lovett who will install her own artwork at Sawyer Park.
