Townsville City Council has issued a call for residents who are interested in having smart water meters installed at their property as part of the next phase of the Water Smart Campaign.
Around 2,300 smart water meters are available and will allow participants to track water consumption and monitor for leaks or periods of high usage.
The information will also allow Council to evaluate how effective the rollout of the Water Smart Package has been in reducing water consumption across the city.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the smart water meters would better engage residents in understanding what being water wise looks like.
“The initial feedback we received as part of the market research for the Water Smart Package was that residents were disconnected with their water usage and weren’t sure what plan they were on or what their water allocation is,” Cr Hill said.
“These smart water metres will provide residents access to an online portal so they can better understand what their water usage looks like and provides leakage alerts which will help the community become more water wise.
“This information will also be valuable for Council to see how well the Water Smart Package has worked and if we’ve seen the reduction in water consumption following such a huge response to the initial package.”
Member for Townsville Scott Stewart encouraged residents to get involved.
“The $10 million Water Smart Package is one part of a three-point water security solution being rolled out by Townsville City Council with Queensland Government funding,” Mr Stewart said.
“The support from the community to the initial phase of the package was fantastic, but it’s important that we continue to work together to ensure Townsville has water security for the decades to come.”
Expressions of interest to take part in the program will close on 28 April, with interested residents encouraged to apply on the Water Smart website. Households will be notified if they are selected to take part.
