Smashing start to glass collection

On Monday and Tuesday nights this week Warrnambool residents helped recycle eight tonnes of glass.

The glass was collected from about 3,350 properties which are taking part in a separate glass collection trial program, which began in February.

“These are really encouraging figures and equates to an average of about 2.4kg of glass per household,” Mayor Cr Tony Herbert said.

“More than 70 per cent of residents in the trial area put out their purple-lidded bins this week.

“Having already introduced a FOGO (food organics, garden organics) collection and now by separating our recyclables – paper, plastics and glass – we are dramatically reducing the volume of waste that ends up in landfill.

“While it’s early days the results are really promising.

“In addition to the household glass collection we have established bottle banks around the city with the bank at Bunnings in Warrnambool’s east particularly popular with people wanting to drop off glass bottles and jars.

“Well done to the residents in the trial area and to those using the bottle banks.

“As with the rollout of any large program we’ve had a few small issues crop up, including being short a few purple lids, but these are being resolved.

“This is a positive response to concerns about climate change and the practice of exporting waste materials overseas.”
