South Australia honours Queen Elizabeth II

South Australia will today acknowledge the 70th anniversary of The Queen’s accession to the throne, and the start of the Platinum Jubilee year, by illuminating iconic buildings across our city in royal purple.

The Adelaide Town Hall, Parliament House, Adelaide Convention Centre, Adelaide Oval, Torrens Riverbank Footbridge, Adelaide Entertainment Centre, O-Bahn Tunnel entrance and Government House will all turn purple tonight to honour seven decades of service to the Commonwealth.

Premier Steven Marshall said it was important that South Australia join with the rest of the nation to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s astounding seventy years of service.

“Seventy years ago, as a twenty-one year old, Her Majesty The Queen said, ‘I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.'”

“There is absolutely no doubt that commitment has well and truly been served by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, she has served with distinction and grace since day one, and continues to do so,” Premier Marshall said.

“Her Majesty The Queen has ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history and has given seventy years of her life in service to the Commonwealth, including Australia and South Australia.

“South Australians have an overwhelming fondness for Her Majesty The Queen, particularly for her sense of duty and devotion to a life of service, particularly during times of significant social change.”

A range of acknowledgments and celebrations are being held around Australia throughout the year with a focus on two key dates.

Today is an opportunity to acknowledge the anniversary of The Queen’s accession to the throne with the focus of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations occurring around the 2-5 June 2022.
