Special workshops to support small business

Two workshops designed to help and inform those involved in small business will be held during September.

Tax essentials and record keeping workshops for small business

Council and the Australian Tax Office (ATO) will join forces to hold a Tax Essentials for Small Business workshop from 9.30am to 11.30am on Thursday 5 September.

This workshop is designed for people considering starting their own business or those new to small business, and offers advice on:

  • business structures and their different rules, tax rates and obligations
  • tax and non-tax business registrations
  • allowable deductions, including motor vehicle deductions, depreciation and home-based business expenses
  • annual and quarterly reporting requirements
  • record-keeping principles, and where to go for help and advice.

The ATO record-keeping workshop is also being held from 9.30am to 11.30am on Thursday 12 September.

This free, introductory session will assist businesses not registered for Goods and Services Tax (GST) and those who want to learn how to keep records and claim entitled deductions.

Both workshops will be held at Gisborne Administration and Service Centre, 40 Robertson Street.

Places are limited and bookings are essential. Please bring a pen and calculator.

The Small Business Bus will also be coming to the Gisborne Service Centre on 30 September.

Free mentoring sessions with an experienced business professional are available throughout the day.
