Statement on Closure of Climbing Uluru

The Territory Labor Government acknowledges the Anangu people as the rightful Traditional Owners of Uluru – and we respect their decision to close the climb once and for all.

Today, the spiritual heartland of Australia is handed back to its people, who have shared their stories for decades.

Uluru will still remain one of the major Australian drawcards for international and national visitors.

Tourism operators will still be in demand, with this government supporting them through our Turbocharging Tourism initiative.

There are lots of ways to experience Uluru without needing to climb it.

Tourism NT are working on marketing strategies for Uluru post-climb including:

  • Arts Trail campaign;
  • New Drive sector marketing activities with specific routes that include Uluru and surrounds;
  • A Voyages partnership campaign; and
  • The Field of Light installation has been extended to 31 December 2020.

The culture and story of Uluru will forever be strong and felt for generations to come; today marks a new positive chapter.
