Statement on passing of former Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer AC

On behalf of the National Farmers’ Federation, President Fiona Simson has extended her sympathy to the family of former Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer AC, and paid tribute to his enormous contribution to regional and rural Australia.

Ms Simson said Mr Fischer’s life’s work on behalf of regional Australians had etched him a special place in the heart of our nation.

“There are few other people who as accurately typify what is means to be an Australian, as Tim Fischer.

Ms Simson said first and foremost, Mr Fischer should be recognised for his service as a conscript and platoon commander in the Vietnam war.

Mr Fischer began his political career and advocacy for the bush, at the early age of 24, serving in the NSW Parliament as the Member for Sturt and Murray and then in federal politics as the Member for Farrer.

“Mr Fischer is remembered for his tireless work as Trade Minister, in particular for his role in opening access in markets including China, India and Iran,” Ms Simson said.

“Of course we’re unlikely to ever see a more passionate and pragmatic advocate for the importance of a modern, efficient rail-based freight system, as the former Deputy Prime Minister.”

A man of absolute character and resolve, Ms Simson also recognised Mr Fischer’s role in the Howard Government’s gun law reform process.

“However, there’s no doubt, that for many Australians, Mr Fischer’s lasting legacy will be his dedication to, and love for his family. Today, our thoughts are with Judy, Harrison and Dominic.”
