Statement on Resignation of Member for Fannie Bay

NT Government

This evening, the Member for Fannie Bay Michael Gunner announced his resignation from the Northern Territory Parliament.

A proud Territorian, and our first Territory born Chief Minister, Michael Gunner was elected into the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in 2008. He has served as a Parliamentarian and as the Member for Fannie Bay for 14 years, five and a half of which he served as Chief Minister.

We thank Michael for his commitment to the Territory, for always putting Territorians first and his ongoing advocacy for the people of Fannie Bay.

Under Michael’s leadership our Government has delivered record investments in health, education, housing and community safety; steered the Territory through the COVID-19 crisis; and locked in huge investments that set us up for long-term growth to benefit all Territorians.

During his time as the Member for Fannie Bay Michael delivered many positive developments across his electorate, from Darwin High school with a new STEM centre and improvements to traffic safety around Stuart Park Primary and Parap Primary, to saving the iconic Rails and lighting up Gardens Oval for night time sport.

He campaigned for the ongoing preservation of East Point, and the new sea wall development to protect Darwin Trailer Boat Club and Darwin Sailing Club from erosion risk. He also enabled Territorians to access better, affordable public and private housing options with the redevelopment of Kurringal and Wirrina public housing blocks.

His resignation will trigger a by-election for the electorate of Fannie Bay. The date for this election will be announced in coming days.

We thank Michael for his dedication to Territorians and we wish Michael, Kristy, Hudson and Nash all the best for the future.
