Statement on serious allegations raised

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

Today, I updated the Tasmanian Parliament on serious allegations raised around a current employee in the Department of Education, which are historical in nature.

I’m informed that while the Department of Education did not have previous knowledge of this matter, upon being made aware of the allegations, the person at the centre of the allegations was removed from their place of work yesterday.

The Secretary of the Department of Education has also advised me that this person will be formally suspended from duty today and an official investigation will commence immediately into their actions.

The Department of Education has referred this matter to the Police and the Department of Justice has also been informed.

Allegations of this nature are taken extremely seriously.

I would urge anyone who has any information about child sexual abuse to report it to Tasmania Police.
