Strategic Environmental Assessment for Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct

NT Government

The landmark Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct has reached another key milestone, with an announcement by the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Water Security of her decision for a strategic assessment by environmental impact statement (EIS) by the independent Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA).

This referral signifies the Territory Labor Government’s commitment to a comprehensive EIS process that will be robust and transparent, providing several opportunities for further public involvement including the opportunity to comment on the draft EIS.

The Middle Arm precinct encompasses approximately 1500 hectares of industrial land on the Middle Arm Peninsula.

The Precinct’s strategic location provides direct access to Darwin Harbour, and is connected to the Territory’s logistics network, including road and rail.

The comprehensive Terms of Reference for matters to be included in the EIS have also been published by the NT EPA.

Quotes from Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Security, Lauren Moss:

“Environmental considerations are paramount in the development of the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct. Baseline investigations are underway, including identifying plant and animal biodiversity, marine environmental values, and air and water quality data to inform planning to protect environmental values during any future development.

“The Territory Labor Government will always ensure our environmental processes are robust, and are open for community feedback and consultation.

“Sustainable outcomes and environmental protection of the Darwin Harbour and surrounds are at the core of planning for the precinct, and will be a key feature of any future EIS.”
