Stronger action needed for community protection

  • NW outbreak worsens
  • More action needed to save lives
  • Premier must clarify next steps
  • More action is needed to prevent further community transmission of COVID-19 on Tasmania’s North West coast.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said the Premier has been given strong signals tougher action will be needed to slow the outbreak.

“We have hundreds of people in the North West of the state now in quarantine, including a large number of health workers.

“The source of the North West outbreak is unknown, and cases continue to increase.

“Last week the Premier said he would not hesitate to take stronger action if the situation deteriorated.

“Since then we have had more than a dozen new cases related to this outbreak, another death, and hundreds more people entering quarantine.

“We have already heard that people who’ve been working in the North West Regional Hospital have travelled to other parts of the state without clear instructions on quarantine requirements.

“This raises concern about the North West outbreak spreading to other parts of the state.

“Clearly more must be done to protect communities.

“We don’t know what the source of this outbreak is, but we do know how we can limit its spread.

“The Premier needs to explain whether he will take further steps to lockdown the North West community and when that will happen.

“These steps may be necessary to restrict the movement of people within the North West region, and the movement of people from that region to other parts of the state.”
