Successful tree planting 2023

Wyndham City is greener following the successful completion of the annual tree planting program.

About 5,100 trees were planted in streets and 3,600 in parks and reserves as part of our Tree Planting Program, resulting in a total of 8,700 trees being planted in 2023.

The annual planting program, which takes place in the cooler months between April and June, aims to provide 25 per centre canopy cover (shade) in streets and 35 per cent in parks and reserves to keep streets and open spaces cool and green.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre, said Council aimed to have at least one tree planted in every suitable nature strip by the year 2030.

“Wyndham has been identified as having one of the lowest tree cover rates in Victoria,” she said.

“With very little shade to keep our streets and homes cool, our City is vulnerable to increased temperatures, increased energy costs, windy weather conditions and limited wildlife habitat.”

“Every tree counts to help reduce the heat island effect, improve air quality and provide habitats.”

“It’s important to protect our trees – and I thank the community for looking after the newly planted trees in our streets and open spaces.”

Additionally, more than 1000 trees were given away at our annual free giveaway in July and 15,000 tube stock planted across Wyndham City – 10,000 of these were planted with the community as part of activities such as National Tree Planting Day.
