Supporting councils to help get more Tasmanians active

Nic Street, Minister for Local Government

Tasmanians can benefit from a more active lifestyle thanks to a new grants program being introduced by the Rockliff Liberal Government.

Applications are now open for local councils to fund improvements to public open spaces to get more Tasmanians active.

All 29 councils are eligible to apply for a share of the $5 million funding.

The initiative is a joint effort between the Rockliff Liberal Government and the Local Government Association of Tasmania.

Minister for Local Government, Nic Street, said “councils are encouraged to develop ambitious proposals responsive to the needs of their local communities and to support their applications with co-funding commitments.”

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is creating opportunities for all Tasmanians to gain the health and wellbeing benefits of active living, including participation in sport and all forms of outdoor recreation.”

LGAT President, Mayor Mick Tucker, said that “this funding for local infrastructure to support the health and wellbeing of our community is warmly welcomed by councils.”

“Local government has a critical role in providing public spaces for their communities to access and enjoy. It is pleasing to see this recognised and supported by the Tasmanian Government.”

The Open Spaces Grant Program will help fund community facilities including parks, change rooms, green spaces, walking, cycling trails, and playgrounds.
