Supporting Territory’s Aviation Sector

The Territory Labor Government will immediately deliver a $2 million support package to retain the Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) aviation services, which are essential for our regional and remote towns in the Territory.

The Territory aviation sector has been significantly impacted by the necessary decision to limit travel in and out of remote communities to essential personnel only.

Continuing the supply of essential goods and services will ensure the protection and support of our communities under these trying circumstances.

Although the coronavirus infection rate in the Territory remains very low, the economic impact of this pandemic is already hitting many Territorians and sectors, including businesses and industries.

The $2 million support package will ensure minimum RPT services continue.

All RPT operators have worked with the Northern Territory Government to provide valuable information to understand the extent of their situations.

As noted by the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“We are doing whatever it takes to save jobs and protect Territorians from the impacts of the coronavirus. It is critical that regular air services continue into our regional and remote towns to enable essential services and supplies to be delivered.”

“We will continue to work with operators to ensure the industry is supported as quickly as possible to retain these essential RPT services, keep Territorians in jobs and retain critical supply lines”.

“We will also continue to work with the Australian Government to secure essential services and support for Territorians.”

As noted by Chief Executive Officer of Hardy Aviation, Andrew Hardy:

“Whilst we have already taken the tough decision to stand down a number of valuable employees, Government’s assistance in retaining a minimum RPT schedule in the short-term is welcomed and will help RPT service providers keep Territorians employed.”
