The largest international lifesaving sport competition starts tomorrow, bringing thousands of lifesavers, officials and supporters from around the globe to South Australian shores.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, David Ridgway, said more than 6000 participants from 44 countries worldwide will descend on Adelaide, with the event expected to inject $18 million into the state’s economy.
“Adelaide is the only city to have secured the World Championship twice, previously hosting a successful championship in 2012, and this speaks volumes about our event hosting capabilities,” said Minister Ridgway.
“This event brings some of the most talented and skilled lifesaving athletes to our city and also showcases Adelaide, our pristine beaches and world-class facilities including the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre.”
The competition program is delivered over 16 days, including events in the surf, on the sand, in the pool and in boats – as competitors vie for the title of World’s Best.
South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive, Rodney Harrex, said for many national and international participants and their families, this will be their first visit to South Australia.
“We are working hard to ensure that they have the best experience in our state and encourage them to take some time to explore our city and immerse themselves in our high-quality food, wine and tourism experiences,” said Mr Harrex.
“This is the largest international lifesaving sports competition, offering a spectacular display of athleticism, team work and individual excellence. I strongly encourage locals to show their support and come out to watch these world-class athletes test their mettle at Glenelg or in the pool at the Aquatic Centre.”
In addition to the athletes, there will be hundreds of officials and thousands of accompanying family and friends travelling to South Australia. 850 volunteers will be donating their own time and contributing to the success of the event. 500 different events will be held across the beach, ocean and pool.
Events South Australia, via the South Australian Tourism Commission, is the major sponsor of the event that will be delivered by Surf Life Saving South Australia together with the International Life Saving Federation.
The 2018 Lifesaving World Championships will be held from 16 November – 2 December at Glenelg Beach and the world-class South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
