Today’s expected extreme heat and elevated fire risk has forced the closure of all walking tracks and trails in national parks across the Sydney region and in some other areas of the State.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Director, Greater Sydney, Deon van Rensburg said the message is clear – check the NPWS alerts website for the latest park closure information before setting out and do not venture onto closed tracks or trails.
“Extreme temperatures are predicted across Sydney today and the risk of fire is high so these closures are about safeguarding the public,” Mr Van Rensburg said.
“All tracks and trails in the Greater Sydney metropolitan area have been closed as well in other parts of the state where safety is a concern in the event of fire, but some visitor areas will remain open.
“The last thing we want is people out on our extensive network of tracks and trails, or in remote areas, if a fire breaks out.
“We apologise for any inconvenience but it is the right thing to do in the face of such extreme heat and heightened bushfire risk.
“The most important thing is to be prepared and check the website for updates before you travel and then follow the safety advice and heed all warning signs and closures.
“There will still be many visitor picnic areas that are open and will offer a nice refuge from the heat,” he said.
