There has never been a worse time to be a weed in Tasmania with today’s opening of the first grant round under Stage 2 of the Government’s $5 million Weeds Action Fund.
The initiative supports the eradication and control of priority weeds that pose a threat to agriculture and the environment, and is a major investment to tackle the significant problem that weeds pose to Tasmania’s primary industries and the environment.
The Weeds Action Fund represents a new approach to weed management, with funds provided to strategically target and tackle high priority weeds across the State.
The small grants round will provide a total of up to $200,000 in the 2020-21 financial year. Grants will be available to farmers, community organisations, land managers and other entities to undertake best practice, long-term and effective actions on weeds.
Landowners, local government and the broader community are encouraged to be strategic and work together to identify, and where possible, eradicate priority weeds that impact their land.
Eligible activities include on-ground management of weeds, education, extension and support activities, and weed management planning to underpin effective management and control of priority weeds.
Priority will be given to applications that propose a strategic and targeted approach to tackling weeds and demonstrate co-investment through funds or in-kind support. Co-investment may include time, cash, or other resources such as labour, expertise, and equipment.
As the administrator of the Weeds Action Fund Program, NRM North will work with delivery partners NRM South and the Cradle Coast Authority to coordinate grants to eligible farmers, community organisations, land managers and other entities to tackle invasive weeds.
