Tasmania joins FIFA Women’s World Cup bid

Will Hodgman,Premier

The Tasmanian Government has backed Australia’s bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.

If the bid is successful, Tasmanian fans could have the opportunity to see world class football stars during three group stage matches at UTAS Stadium in Launceston.

It would position Tasmania strongly on the world stage, with international players and fans visiting our island home and sampling all we have to offer.

The Women’s World Cup is a major event on the international sports calendar, attracting global media presence and significant broadcast audiences around the world. The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final, for example, was watched by an estimated 750 million viewers worldwide, and was the most watched soccer match in American history, with nearly 23 million viewers.

Our involvement will importantly also encourage more Tasmanian women and girls to participate in sport, which is critical for building a healthier Tasmania.

FIFA will publish bid evaluation reports in April 2020. The outcome of the bid will be decided by vote of 37 FIFA board members, expected to take place in May 2020.
