Tasmania’s seafood industry has once again demonstrated why it’s regarded as one of Australia’s best, achieving outstanding success at the 2026 National Seafood Industry Awards.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, congratulated the Tasmanian seafood organisations and businesses recognised at the national awards announced in Sydney.
“These awards showcase the innovation, sustainability and professionalism that have become hallmarks of Tasmania’s seafood industry,” Minister Pearce said.
“Tasmania secured national awards across research, environmental stewardship, workforce development and seafood tourism, highlighting the breadth of expertise and excellence that exists throughout our seafood sector.”
Among the national winners were Associate Professor Alison Turnbull and her collaborative team, who received the Research, Development and Extension Award for their scientific leadership in supporting the reopening of Australia’s live lobster exports to China; the Giant Kelp Restoration Project, a partnership between the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and the Tasmanian Commercial Divers Association, which won the Environment Award; and Women in Seafood Australasia’s Turn the Tide Program, which received the People and Development Award.
“Tasmanian Wild Seafood Adventures was also recognised as Joint National Winner of the Seafood Experience Award, showcasing the unique and world-class experiences our seafood industry can offer visitors,” Minister Pearce said.
“I also extend my congratulations to Stuart Richey AM, who was named Joint National Industry Ambassador and inducted into the 2026 Seafood Industry Hall of Fame.
“Stuart’s contribution to Australia’s seafood industry over more than four decades has been extraordinary. His leadership has helped shape fisheries policy, seafood exports, marine safety and industry development, and this recognition is richly deserved.”
Minister Pearce also acknowledged the strong representation of Tasmanian finalists across the awards program, including Mures Tasmania, Mures Upper Deck, Jock Mure and Brendon ‘Squizzy’ Taylor.
“Whether recognised as winners or finalists, each nominee has helped showcase Tasmania’s reputation for producing premium seafood, embracing innovation and caring for our marine environment,” he said.
“Through our Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re continuing to support a sustainable and prosperous seafood industry, which plays a vital role in regional communities, creates jobs and delivers significant economic value to our state.
“These national awards reinforce Tasmania’s standing as a seafood powerhouse and recognise the people and businesses whose commitment to excellence continues to drive the industry forward.
“Congratulations to all Tasmanians recognised at this year’s National Seafood Industry Awards.”
