Tasmanian housing industry setting a record pace

Elise Archer,Minister for Building and Construction

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is a strong supporter of our building and construction sector, and we are committed to investing further to create more jobs across the industry.

The Tasmanian Outlook released by the Housing Industry Association (HIA) today is further evidence of strong growth in the State’s building sector.

There were 701 detached house starts in the March quarter of 2019, with the HIA saying this was “the State’s strongest performance in 25 years.”

The HIA Outlook indicated the number of housing starts of 2,681 in 2018/19 was the highest financial year total since 1994.

Both today’s HIA Outlook, and the Master Builders Association Scorecard released last month, show Tasmania only being behind Victoria in terms of building sector activity.

The HIA declared, “Tasmania may even take out top place in the coming months”, with a forecast cooling of the Victorian market.

Both reports show the Hodgman majority Liberal Government’s policies aimed at encouraging more Tasmanians to build a home are working.

We will continue to put in place the right conditions to support the sector and ensure these great outcomes continue well into the future.
