Tasmanians need relief on power prices 09 July 2023

Tas Labor

The Tasmanian Labor petition on power prices currently stands as one of the largest petitions that will ever been received by the Tasmanian Parliament.

Currently standing thousands of Tasmanians are telling the Liberals they want and need cost of living relief.

This weekend the Tasmanian Labor team has been out in communities right around the state, talking to people about our Right Priorities Plan for the state.

Overwhelmingly, a number of residents have shared their concerns about the impact of skyrocketing power prices. They rightly expect to pay Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian Power.

Soaring power bills only add to the cost of living pressures facing Tasmanian families as they also contend with increasing groceries, rents and interest rates.

Since June last year, power bills have increased by 22.5 per cent meaning households are paying hundreds more for their electricity usage.

The minority Liberal Government could act to save households this expense, but instead they twice voted down Labor’s legislation to cap power prices at 2.5 per cent.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff should recall Parliament early to deal with this important issue and provide families with real relief from soaring power costs.

The Liberals have been in office for 10 years. They have broken two successive energy policies but still have their policy to cap power prices on their website. If it is on their website, it is their policy and they should return to Parliament to implement it.
