A teenager will face court next month after a pursuit near Tweed Heads yesterday this afternoon which has ended with two cars being destroyed by fire.
The incident began with officers from Tweed/Byron Police District pursuing a sedan travelling north along the M1 Pacific Motorway about 1.55pm (Thursday 22 August 2019).
Traffic & Highway Patrol officers deployed road spikes at Duranbah Tunnel near Chinderah and the sedan’s tyres were deflated; however, when the sedan and a Highway Patrol car stopped on the shoulder, the grass caught fire destroying both vehicles.
Three males were removed from their car and checked at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.
The driver, a 17-year-old Carseldine (Queensland) youth, was charged with police pursuit – drive manner dangerous/not stop and driving whilst unlicensed – first offence.
He was granted conditional bail and will appear at a children’s court on Monday, 16 September 2019.
His two passengers were released and no further police action is anticipated against them.
