Ten new homes for Tennant Creek

Ten new homes will be built in Tennant Creek as part of the NT Government’s $100 million public housing stimulus program.

Announced this week, tenders were awarded to Tennant Creek builders, GK Painting Contractors and Alice Springs-based company, Asbuild NT.

Each company will construct five homes across six Community Living Areas.

So far, the NT Government has expended $153 million on urban public housing stimulus programs, building and upgrading more than 4500 homes across the Northern Territory.

The six three-bedroom homes and four four-bedroom homes will be built at Village, Marla Marla, Munji Marla, Tingkarli, Karguru and Mulga.

Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

As stated by Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Gerry McCarthy:

“These new homes will be welcome additions to public housing stock in Tennant Creek.

“The Territory Labor Government’s housing plan for Tennant Creek supports the construction of more than 60 homes with around 33 dwellings to be returned to public housing stock upon completion of other building projects.

“This will increase the housing capacity of public housing in Tennant Creek by more than 50 per cent.

“Additionally, under our public housing stimulus programs, we have upgraded more than 140 houses.

“My Government has proved its commitment to the town, the economy and to improving lives through better housing.”

As stated by George Konedaris, GK Painting Contractors:

“Work slowed down during the coronavirus pandemic so this contract will definitely boost our business and local employment.

“I will do anything I can to make Tennant Creek a better place because the more people who have a job here, the better it is for the whole town.

“Also it’s important that the people here have good homes and these new houses will make a big difference to the families who move in.”
