Tender awarded for new nature playground in heart of Bunbury

  • Contract awarded to BGC Construction’s Bunbury-based regional team, creating about 50 jobs
  • Mangrove Cove playground construction to start in June
  • Western Australian company BGC Construction Pty Ltd has been awarded a tender to deliver construction works at Mangrove Cove in Bunbury.

The project will include construction of an accessible nature-play focused playground with an emphasis on the local mangrove area, a new accessible toilet block and further site landscaping.

The developments at Mangrove Cove will complement existing facilities, including the iconic lookout tower and environmental education pavilion.

The project will require a workforce of about 50 people and BGC expects that 75 per cent of the contract value will be spent within the region, with the major components of work being completed by Bunbury-based contractors.

The project is jointly managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions’ Parks and Wildlife Service and the Department of Finance.

Construction is expected to start in June 2021 and be completed by the end of the year.

As stated by Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“The McGowan Government is committed to supporting projects that can maximise benefits to the Western Australian community. This project creates local jobs, a nature-based recreational opportunity and, importantly, will ensure Mangrove Cove is accessible to all visitors.

“Mangrove Cove is a much-loved location in Bunbury and these works will only add to the area’s popularity with locals and visitors alike.

“These upgrades are part of the McGowan Government’s election commitment to maintain and improve environmental, recreational, social and cultural values for residents of Bunbury and surrounds.”

As stated by Bunbury MLA Don Punch:

“Mangrove Cove is a fantastic part of Bunbury – and the new accessible nature playground will bring even more visitors from around the State to this popular attraction.

“The nature playground and toilet blocks will be universally accessible, so all members of the Bunbury community will be able to enjoy this excellent new asset.

“In addition to the obvious community benefits, the project will stimulate the local South-West economy and create around 50 new jobs following the welcome appointment of the Bunbury arm of WA’s BGC Construction Pty Ltd as contractor.”
