Tenth red-tagged fish caught just in time for Christmas

Christmas has come early for Territorian Nathan Farmer, after reeling in a Million Dollar Fish Season 7 barramundi on the Little Finniss River yesterday.

Underwritten by SportsBet, Million Dollar Fish is the gift that keeps on giving, with a total of 10 barramundi caught by local and interstate anglers since Season 7 began on 1 October.

The latest catch, hooked by Humpty Doo’s Nathan Farmer, measured a healthy 71cm and will see the local angler go home $10,000 richer.

A fishing fanatic, Nathan said he’d put some of the cash towards more fishing tackle to try and catch the Million Dollar Fish.

There are still 102 Season 7 $10,000 fish swimming around Top End waterways, including the additional prize-tagged barra released in the Darwin region over the past month, as part of the new Merry Fishmas campaign. Eight red-tagged barramundi carrying $1 million tags are also active as part of Season 7.

This Season, every $10,000 fish caught sees an additional $1,000 donated to an official Million Dollar Fish charity. Nathan decided to donate the funds to Shoreline, an organisation that cultivates educational programs and employment pathways to create sustainable careers for young Indigenous Australians.

Million Dollar Fish Season 7 runs from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022, meaning there is still plenty of time to register and hit the water for the chance to catch a prize-tagged fish!

Quotes from Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC) CEO Tim Watsford:

“We are almost halfway through Million Dollar Fish Season 7, and already we’ve had 10 prize-tagged fish caught across the Top End.

“Australia’s richest fishing competition is certainly living up to its name, and we are stoked to see local and visiting anglers alike win big simply by exploring our world-class fishing destinations.

“With more than three months left in Season 7, there’s still plenty of time to register and wet a line for the chance to bag a prize-tagged barra.”

Quotes from SportsBet External Affairs Manager Brad Fanning:

“On behalf of SportsBet, we are thrilled to see the tenth Season 7 fish go off and another $10,000 cheque given to a registered fisho.

“I’d like to congratulate Nathan Farmer on his winning catch and encourage everyone to try their luck for the chance to bag the Million Dollar Fish – who knows, one cast could see you become a millionaire.”

Quotes from winning fisho Nathan Farmer:

“I was happy enough to catch a barra, let alone one with a red tag in it!

“We didn’t realise it had a red tag in it until my mate was taking it out of the net and saw it. It took a minute to sink in, and when we realised it was crazy – we definitely went into party mode!

“I’m happy to be able to give the $1,000 to Shoreline as I really like what they’re doing by giving young people opportunities.”

Quotes from Shoreline Managing Director Jason Ryan:

“We are absolutely delighted that Nathan has chosen Shoreline as his charity.

“The donation will go directly towards creating opportunities for young Indigenous students to develop their skills and obtain marine certifications to become fishing guides in the Top End.

“Hopefully one of the graduates can help land a Top End fisho the Million Dollar Fish in seasons to come.”
