Territory’s most creative young artists on exhibition

1 February 2023

It’s one of the most highly-anticipated exhibitions of the year: Exit Art.

Since the 1970s, Exit Art has showcased the incredible work of Year 12 art students in the Northern Territory, and the exhibition of the class of 2022 officially opens tomorrow at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT).

This year the exhibition features the work of 50 student artists from schools in Nhulunbuy, Alice Springs, Palmerston and Darwin.

There are intriguing works across a range of contemporary and traditional media – including film, photography, 3D, sculpture and painting.

Exit Art is a long-standing partnership between MAGNT and the Department of Education. It provides the students with an opportunity to have their work professionally curated and exhibited in one to the Territory’s most visited attractions, accessible to potential employers and universities.

Earlier this week, the Minister for Education selected the Minister’s Choice Award, which will be on display in Parliament House for 12 months from the conclusion of Exit Art.

Don’t forget to vote for your favourite piece in the People’s Choice Award!

Tomorrow is the opening night for Exit Art at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, with the exhibition running until 26 March 2023.

Quotes from Minister for Education, Eva Lawler

“Exit Art provides students with a platform to express their creativity and it is wonderful to have this opportunity to learn and share in the diversity and views of our students expressed through their artworks.

“The exceptional quality of this work is a testament to the hard work of these students and the valuable contributions of our teachers, their families and our wider community in nurturing their artistic talents and creative thinking.

“The Territory Labor Government is proud to support a thriving and innovative arts community, and Exit Art helps our young artists and designers to bridge the space between the schoolroom and the wider arts scene.

“I look forward to Exit Art every year and never fail to be impressed by the quality and creativity of our young artists.”
