Territory Welcomes 330 New Teachers for 2020 School Year

This year, 330 new teachers will begin their careers in Northern Territory education, with more than half today beginning a two day orientation in Darwin.

Minister for Education, Selena Uibo, welcomed the 175 teachers attending today’s orientation, before they head out to their respective schools later this week to start the 2020 school year.

This year, 61 of the 175 teachers undergoing orientation have moved to the NT from Victoria, while 31 are Territory residents. Eight have relocated from overseas.

The new teachers are a mix of graduates (65) and experienced teachers (110). One third of the 175 new recruits attending orientation in Darwin, 57, are headed to remote schools.

All new recruits are invited to the two day orientation, which provides teachers with information on NT education’s unique cultural context, the Department of Education’s priorities and initiatives, and ensures they know where to access support and services and professional networks to smooth the transition of teaching in the Territory.

School resumes next week in the Northern Territory, with urban students back next Tuesday, 28 January and remote students returning on Wednesday, 29 January.

As noted by Minister for Education, Selena Uibo.

“The Territory Labor Government will always invest in education and today it is my pleasure to welcome 330 new teachers to the Territory for the 2020 school year.

“As a teacher myself, I know it is one of the most rewarding careers in the world and I congratulate all our new recruits in taking the step to help shape a bright future for all of our Territory kids.

“This year, our government is investing a record, $1.16 billion in education to give all our Territory young people the best start in life, so they can grow and achieve bright futures.

“But we know we cannot achieve that without our dedicated teachers.

“Unlike the CLP, who sacked 500 teachers and support staff, we are supporting our teachers to deliver the best education to our students because we know when our teachers are at their best, our students are at their best.”
