Thanking our foster carers

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The Rockliff Liberal Government thanks foster and kinship carers during Foster Care Week for the the safe, nurturing environment they provide for children and young people in need.

Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch, said there are approximately 850 households providing foster and kinship care to nearly 1000 children and young people across Tasmania.

“There can be no greater investment in our future than to give a child a loving place to call home,” Minister Jaensch said.

“Without the commitment and generosity of Tasmania’s foster and kinship carers the needs of some children and young people in care would not be met.

“Our Government – and I’m sure all Tasmanians – feel gratitude and admiration for the carers who play such an important role in giving these children and young people opportunities to thrive and succeed in life.”

The Tasmanian Government currently provides around $60 million per year in funding to Out of Home Care for family-based care, special care packages, sibling group care, residential care, emergency care and respite care.

Minister Jaensch said a new user-friendly website is soon to be launched that will provide people with information about current care providers and how to become a foster carer.

“There is always a call for more foster carers and I encourage anyone interested in learning more about the role they can play in helping children and young people to visit the new website,” Minister Jaensch said.

Foster Care Week runs from 10 to 16 September and is the annual celebration of the role played by foster and kinship carers in the lives of children, young people and families.
