THE BIRDSVILLE CARNIVAL IS BACK – July 8 and 9:
TRACTOR PULLS, CAMEL PIES, COLD BEERS & AUSTRALIA’S RICHEST (novelty) CAMEL STEEPLECHASE TO TAKE OVER THE OUTBACK
Birdsville in Outback Queensland is set to explode into life this July as one of Australia’s most remote towns transforms into a two-day celebration of music, comedy, storytelling and outback spectacle.
The Birdsville Carnival (July 8–9, 2026) as part of the Desert Champions Way: Outback Camel Trail will deliver a high-energy program of uniquely Australian experiences, from an epic Tractor Pull, and a to Australia’s richest (novelty) Camel Steeplechase, all set against the iconic red dunes of Outback Queensland.

As part of the wider Desert Champions Way: Outback Camel Trail, the Carnival connects Birdsville into a five-town touring festival spanning Jundah, Bedourie, Boulia and Winton across July, celebrating outback culture through sport, story and community. Across the two days, Birdsville will come alive with live music in the legendary Birdsville Hotel beer garden, campfire yarns, open-air cinema, camel-inspired craft workshops, exhibitions, , and immersive heritage experiences throughout town.
Australia’s Richest (Novelty) Camel Steeplechase – Held at Birdsville Oval, this chaotic crowd favourite sees competitors don latex camel masks and race through a 100m obstacle course in heats of five, with a grand final to decide the fastest desert “camel”. Open to adults 18+ with kids’ races following the final.
Birdsville Tractor Pull – Teams of two go head-to-head in a timed 20m strength challenge on the Oval, pulling tractors through pure outback grit for prizes, bragging rights and a place in Carnival folklore.
LIVE MUSIC & CAMPFIRE STORIES – Daily live music fills the Birdsville Hotel beer garden with performances by Mick Lindsay, alongside evening entertainment, yarns and guest artists.

WORKSHOPS, CULTURE & FAMILY PROGRAM – The Carnival features a rotating daily program including:

- “The Black Book: Francis Gage McGinn” exhibition at Wirrarri Visitor Information Centre
- Birdsville Carnival Playgroup (camel-themed sessions for kids)

Desert Champions Way: Outback Camel Trail
The most Outback-tastic adventure of the year is BACK – the Desert Champions Way: Outback Camel Trail will again send dust flying across Outback Queensland over five epic events in July, taking in the iconic towns of Jundah, Birdsville, Bedourie, Boulia and Winton. This road-tripping, town-hopping celebration of Outback spirit, with unforgettable experiences at every stop, is anchored by classic Outback Camel races that are as chaotic as they are competitive. Fans can expect a bucket-list adventure showcasing cameleering history, legendary Outback pubs, camel everything (!), some of the quirkiest pig, yabby and mower races (at Boulia), stargazing nights, and a once-in-a-decade canvas of blooming desert flowers, thanks to the region’s recent rains.
