The Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS)-based Adrift Lab has been announced as a participating artist in the 22nd Biennale of Sydney, to be held from March to June 2020.
Adrift Lab is a dedicated group of researchers from across the globe studying all things adrift in the ocean, including plastic, chemicals, and wildlife.
Adrift Lab member and University of Tasmania scientist, Dr Jennifer Lavers, said Adrift Lab’s exhibit had been produced in collaboration with Hobart’s Detached Cultural Organisation.
“Our work features the impacts of marine plastic at three of my research sites: Lord Howe Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Henderson Island.”
Dr Lavers made global headlines earlier this year with her study which looked at non-lethal impacts of plastic ingestion in seabirds at the remote Lord Howe Island.
The 22nd Biennale of Sydney is an artist- and First Nations-led presentation of contemporary art that connects local communities and global networks.
The 2020 instalment, titled NIRIN, will feature 98 artists hosted across six sites in Sydney from 14 March to 18 June.
