If you live, work, study or volunteer in Stonnington, you’re invited to join our Environmental Champions program, a free training course designed to give you the tools to take climate action and help us build a more sustainable Stonnington.
The 12-week program, beginning in August, offers training and support to develop leadership and project skills and deliver local environmental and climate action projects.
The successful applicants will engage in weekly interactive training workshops, learn from a range of experts and connect with local community groups and Traditional Owners. Champions will learn about climate change, the local environment, leadership, behaviour change and how to turn an idea into a project and make an impact in the community.
City of Stonnington Mayor, Councillor Kate Hely, says it’s vital to empower the community to take climate action and to protect our environment.
“This program gives our community the tools to enact change,” she says.
“Last year, the first Champions program supported 14 community-led projects including a nature strip gardening group, community micro-festival and kitchen library.
“The Stonnington Bicycle User Group, or BUG is working to make cycling safer and easier in our city.
“Regenerating the Kooyongkoot was a fantastic community-led festival held in March that celebrated the communities who care for and regenerate biodiversity corridors around our local waterways and invited Traditional Owners to tell First Nations stories.
“I can’t wait to meet this year’s Environmental Champions and see the projects that they come up with.
“I’d encourage anyone who is passionate about helping to build a more sustainable, resilient and connected Stonnington to apply.”
