Three strikes: Rockliff keeps missing his own infrastructure strategy deadlines

Tasmanian Labor
  • 30-year strategy promised in 2018 now ‘expected’ in July-September
  • Rockliff breaking promises as traffic, roads and public transport wane
  • Tasmanians deserve serious investment in infrastructure
  • Premier Hodgman must fess up to the Roads Australia event he’s addressing today why the Liberals’ 30-year infrastructure strategy has been yet again delayed.

In July last year, Minister Rockliff had promised to release the 30-year strategy by the end of 2018.

Minister Rockliff was then forced to admit he missed his own deadline and delay the release until March.

Now the Liberals’ laughable Second Year Agenda has the overdue document slated for some time between July and September (Page 28).

Meanwhile it is so chaotic in the Liberal Party that Federal Braddon Candidate Gavin Pearce is at war with State Liberals over roads funding on the West Coast*.

Shadow Infrastructure Minister David O’Byrne said the Liberals had no infrastructure agenda.

“Minister Rockliff has made a complete hash of roads and public transport policy in Tasmania,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“Three times the Liberals have missed their own generous deadlines to release the 30-year infrastructure strategy.

“Does Minister Rockliff now intend to release a 28-year strategy?

With 87 per cent of people saying traffic is getting worse under the Liberals, nothing is happening to make traffic run more smoothly.

“Minister Rockliff has broken a Liberal promise to build an underground bus mall in Hobart saying ‘it wasn’t his idea’:

“The bus mall idea, or transit center idea, was an idea of the previous infrastructure minister.”

    • Jeremy Rockliff, The Mercury, 14 March

“Minister Rockliff can’t be trusted to deliver a 30-year strategy when he can’t even keep promises within a year of an election,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“Tasmanians travelling on congested or unsafe roads deserve action and a government prepared to invest in our long-term infrastructure needs.”
