A group of Park Ridge pre-schoolers has helped the City of Logan celebrate some significant milestones during National Recycling Week.
The children and their carers at Park Ridge Childcare and Preschool today hosted a visit by Deputy Mayor Jon Raven, Division 8 Councillor Jacob Heremaia and representatives from Logan City Council’s new waste contractor Cleanaway.
They learned about the benefits of recycling, helped sort and bin recyclable materials and watched as a yellow-lid recycling bin was emptied into a Cleanaway truck.
Council’s recycling education and awareness visit was part of National Recycling Week, which continues through to Sunday, November 14.
There are now nearly 120,000 premises across the City of Logan with yellow-lid recycling bins.
In 2020/21, this resulted in a record 13,225 tonnes of recyclable material being diverted from landfill.
Requests also continue to come in for Council’s new green waste bins with 543 applications received in October.
There are now 11,513 green waste bins being collected each fortnight across the city which has resulted in nearly 1100 tonnes of green waste being turned into compost since July 1, when the service was launched.
City of Logan residents also appear to be gaining a better understanding of good recycling practices.
The latest contamination rate (28.3 per cent) – which represents items put in yellow-lid bins that are not recyclable – was the lowest in 18 months.
Councillor Raven praised City of Logan residents for embracing recycling but urged there was more work to be done.
“Reducing the amount of rubbish that gets buried as landfill is everyone’s job,” Cr Raven said.
“Our recycling and green waste bins are helping to do that and we will continue to work with residents to explore new ways to reduce what goes into our landfill bins every week.”
Cr Heremaia said it was important that everyone understands the benefits of recycling, irrespective of their age.
“Good recycling habits can be practised your entire life and can help the environment for generations to come,” he said.
