Toowong ready to power up again as restrictions ease

Toowong’s upgraded power network is ready as the area’s businesses re-open under the roadmap to easing restrictions.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the massive upgrade of Energex’s Wool Street substation had significantly increased the reliability and performance of the local network.

“More than 10,000 homes and businesses in the Toowong area rely on this network,” Dr Lynham said.

“The electricity demand in the Toowong area has grown significantly in recent years and modelling shows it will continue as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These upgrades increase the substation’s reliability and also allow Energex crews to divert and switch power faster if storms and other unexpected events cause outages.

“Just as importantly, these upgrades supported the specialised jobs of dozens of Energex workers and contractors during the two-year life of the project.”

Dr Lynham said a robust plocal ower network also supported businesses and industry.

“When businesses seek to open or expand a good utility base is required and a reliable electricity supply is a major factor in their decision-making,” he said.

“This work will help maintain reliability in a particularly crucial time when Queensland’s economy needs business and industry moving forward into post-CVOID recovery.”

Queensland’s publicly-owned electricity companies – Powerlink, Ergon, Energex, CS Energy, Stanwell Corp and CleanCo – will invest more than $2.2 billion on capital works in 2019-20, supporting up to 4900 jobs.
