Traffic Improvements – East Parkway and The Strand Intersection

Council has received numerous requests from members of the local community, about road safety and clarity in respect to giveway requirements at the intersection of East Parkway and The Strand ,Lightsview. Accordingly, Council at its meeting held in September 2019 resolved to undertake community engagement on the proposal to install a roundabout at the intersection.

What does the intersection upgrade involve?

The intersection upgrade consists of the installation of a roundabout and associated infrastructure. As outlined in the attached concept design, the roundabout will require the removal of existing medians and widening of the intersection to the south. It will also result in the loss of two street trees. There will be lighting upgrades as required by the relevant design standards.

Why are we doing the upgrade?

East Parkway is a major collector road in the area and as such, it’s a busy thoroughfare and there is confusion about traffic priorities at the intersection; it has been reported that this situation often results in near misses/traffic conflicts.

The roundabout installation will remove all confusion regarding traffic priorities at the intersection and will result in a safer traffic flow for all road users. A roundabout treatment is proven to reduce traffic speeds which will further alleviate traffic safety issues.

How can you participate?

We are encouraging local community who are users of this intersection to participate in the community engagement process. You can provide your feedback by Friday 31 January 2020:
