Trainees building Tasmania’s modular housing future

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government continues to support the Tasmanian construction and building industry through education, training, and employment opportunities for young Tasmanians.

Today, the Podmatrix Pathway Program was launched in partnership with TasTAFE and Business and Employment Southeast Tasmania.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street praised the importance of the program, which provides opportunities for young Tasmanians aged 16-24 to become Tasmania’s next generation of homebuilders.

“Our housing construction industry has never been in more demand. The Podmatrix Pathway Program is a tailored and supported pathway for more young Tasmanians who have an interest in building and construction careers and provides the practical work experience and accredited training outcomes needed,” Minister Street said.

“Participants who successfully complete the six-week program will achieve three nationally recognised units, a great step forward towards a career in the building and construction industry.

“As part of the program, they will work together with the skilled Podmatrix team to deliver a construction project in the form of a modular cubby house, which will be donated to charity for children’s use.”

Minister Street said Podmatrix is one of the three suppliers of Homes Tasmania’s ModHomes program and is the first to implement the training opportunity.

“The ModHomes provided by Podmatrix is an innovative and responsive product response to increase housing supply and these new training opportunities through the ModHomes program are really valuable.

“The flexibility of Homes Tasmania allows us to adapt to the changing needs and requirements of the housing landscape in Tasmania, a key consideration outlined in our recently launched Tasmanian Housing Strategy.”

The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to providing workforce training, increasing the supply of skilled labour, creating jobs and delivering 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.

Applications for the program are now open, commencing in February.
