One of Townsville’s busiest boulevards has had a tree-change makeover thanks to the Palaszczuk Government’s signature Works for Queensland program.
Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said the planting of trees and landscaping works had transformed Nathan Street.
“This was only possible through more than $2.2 million from the Palaszczuk Government’s $600 million Works for Queensland program,” he said.
“The new trees planted here will help to make an already beautiful city an even better place to live and visit.”
Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke said the improvements came with significant economic benefits.
“Apart from more than 20 jobs created through the works, beautification projects such as this also ensure more visitors are attracted to Townsville, boosting tourism and businesses,” Mrs O’Rourke said.
Minister for Local Government Stirling Hinchliffe said the Works for Queensland program allowed regional councils to fund projects that supported thousands of jobs across the State.
“In Townsville alone, across the three rounds of Works for Queensland, Townsville City Council has been allocated more than $69.6 million to help deliver 96 projects,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“Importantly, the first two rounds of this funding helped to create or support 1,234 jobs, with another 175 jobs by 2021 through the third round.
“This is an outstanding result for the Townsville community and the Council has done a fantastic job in delivering these projects.”
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill thanked the Palaszczuk Government for its support.
“Nathan Street is one of our busier roads and these improvements will give this area a genuine lift for motorists, residents and visitors,” Cr Hill said.
“The Works for Queensland program has been integral in helping the Council deliver projects that may otherwise have proved too difficult.
“There is no doubt the program has had an enormously positive impact and is a wonderful example of our two levels of government working together for the benefit of the community.”
