Trophy Tour puts WA in FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 spotlight

  • FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy Tour in Perth ahead of FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023
  • Tour also heading to Busselton, Kununurra and Broome
  • The Cook Labor Government has supported women’s World Cup
  • $35 million invested to deliver upgrades to match venue Perth Rectangular Stadium

FIFA fever has officially begun, with the Women’s World Cup Trophy Tour kicking off in Perth today.

The Original Trophy, which will be awarded to the winning team of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, will be on display from noon today at Forrest Place before travelling to Busselton tomorrow, Kununurra on Sunday, 9 July, and Broome on Monday, 10 July.

The Trophy Tour celebrations include a chance to have your photo taken with the Original Trophy, get autographs from female football heroes – including Perth Glory Captain Tash Rigby and FIFA Ambassador Aya Miyama – and enjoy a kickabout on the mini-pitch.

The Tour comes ahead of one of the biggest football tournaments in Western Australia’s history, with five blockbuster Perth-based matches as part of the Tournament:

  • 22 July: Denmark v People’s Republic of China;
  • 26 July: Republic of Ireland v Canada;
  • 29 July: Panama v Jamaica;
  • 1 August: Haiti v Denmark; and
  • 3 August: Morocco v Colombia.

Excitement for football fans will continue throughout the month-long tournament, with Forrest Place transforming into a Fan Festival hub where fans can enjoy live matches, music and performances, football activations and food and beverages.

The Cook Labor Government, through Tourism WA, is proud to support theFIFA Women’s World Cup, investing $35 million to deliver upgrades to the match venue – Perth Rectangular Stadium.

Upgrades to the Perth Rectangular Stadium include:

  • installation of 9500 square metres of hybrid turf in line with FIFA specifications, providing a state-of-the-art playing surface;
  • installation of 294 new LED lights ensuring the stadium is ready for camera action, meeting FIFA’s TV broadcast standards;
  • new larger high-definition video boards;
  • revamped changing rooms and a new tunnel for players to enter the pitch; and
  • accessibility improvements to the ground.

The matches are expected to attract thousands of out-of-state visitors and inject millions of dollars into the WA economy while showcasing WA to a global audience of up to two billion.

“This FIFA Women’s World Cupwill be history-making for WA and will put our State on the map with thousands of visitors coming here to see their country play and billions more watching on TV.

“The launch of the Trophy Tour today is the start of an incredible month of football for Western Australians with five blockbuster world cup games being hosted here in Perth as well as two world-class English Premier League sides in West Ham and Tottenham coming out for exhibition games later this month.

“The Trophy Tour will also include regional celebrations as the Original Trophy stops at Busselton, Kununurra and Broome over the coming days, and I encourage all football fans to take part in the festivities.”

“The Original Trophy tour coming to Western Australia this week gives fans a taste of the global sporting spectacular that is set to land on our shores in 13 short days.

“Hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup is a unique opportunity to realise a meaningful and lasting legacy for women’s football, in WA and across Australia. It will highlight pathways into the sport, boost participation, and encourage young women to play at an elite level.

“There has been almost half a billion dollars of combined investment in WA sporting facilities ahead of the tournament, to be used not only over the life of this tournament but well into the future.”
