The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Tropical Cyclone Warning for parts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. An active monsoon is also bringing wet and windy conditions across other parts of the Top End.
A tropical low in the Timor Sea could intensify to cyclone strength and track towards the Kimberley Coast or southwest Top End coast in the coming days.
The warning covers Dundee Beach in the NT to Kalumburu in WA, including Wadeye, Kununurra and Wyndham, but not including Kalumburu.
Senior Meteorologist Rebecca Patrick said that the large area reflects the wide range of possible tracks the system could take.
“Tropical systems can intensify and change direction quickly. The system is being closely monitored by the Bureau and local communities are reminded to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings using the BOM Weather app or the Bureau’s website.
“Flood Watches remain in place for large areas of the NT, including the Upper Victoria River, Tanami Desert, Barkly, Central Desert, MacDonnell Ranges, Simpson Desert, Georgina River and Eyre Creek, East Kimberley Rivers, Sturt Creek District, Towns River, Limmen Bight River, Rosie River, McArthur River, Robinson River, Calvert River, Settlement Creek and Nicholson River.”
Northern Territory Emergency Services Deputy Director Bob Evans said, “Those residents within the warning area, particularly those in Timber creek, Wadeye and Lajamanu, should now finalise their preparations and be prepared to take shelter should the weather start to deteriorate.
“Your emergency kits should be fully stocked and ready. You should determine now, where you and your family will take shelter if required to do so.
“Please check on your neighbours, particularly any elderly or vulnerable people who may not be aware of the developing situation.
“Heavy rains and gales are possible; please use all safety precautions, check road conditions before travelling and never attempt to cross any flooded roads or crossings. If it’s flooded forget it”
