Our recycled roads mean we’re using fewer virgin materials while turning waste into a valuable resource, an important part of our commitment to creating a local circular economy.
It’s often said that rates, roads and rubbish are the three Rs of local councils.
Our engineering and city works teams have taken this to heart, steadily repurposing thousands of tonnes of recycled waste materials into new and upgraded roads across Greater Geelong.
Over the past 12 months, our road projects have used:
- 7,151 tonnes of recycled asphalt instead of new asphalt
- 2,426,300 broken glass bottles instead of virgin sand
- crumbed rubber from 1,483 old truck tyres in the bitumen to seal 24 kilometres of rural roads
- 6,790 litres of recycled engine oil as an aggregate precoat for road sealing
Some recent projects such as new recycled roads are being completed every month.
