Two penguin sculptures were recently installed between the St Kilda Foreshore and Luna Park (corner of Jacka Boulevard and Shakespeare Grove). Standing at 2.1 metres tall, the penguins frame a gateway from the beach to the businesses on Acland Street and are a fitting celebration of St Kilda’s iconic penguin colony.
The penguin silhouettes were designed and created by MetalBird and come thanks to the Acland Street Village Business Association making great use of one of our Love My Place grants.
Acland Street Village Business Association President Janet Rosenberg said the penguin sculptures are a boost for local traders and the St Kilda community.
“The penguins not only point the way to our shopping precinct, but also provide a great opportunity for visitors to take a photo with the iconic St Kilda Beach as the background,” she said.
The project was produced in collaboration with the Boonwurrung Land and Sea Council, which provided the name, “barring goyeep djinang yawa”, meaning “the trail of the penguin”.
