The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning 2 hazard reductions burns in Warrumbungle National Park, near Coonabarabran, starting on Friday 19 May weather permitting.
The 2 burns, which will have a combined treated area of 270 hectares, aim to strategically reduce the fuel loads across the park to prevent the spread of wildfire.
Pending appropriate weather conditions, the burns are expected to start on Friday morning and will continue through to Thursday 25 May.
Several localised track and camp closures will be implemented in the park for the duration of the burn, including:
- Burbie Fire Trail, Burbie Canyon Walking Track, Belougery Split Rock Walking Track, Mt Exmouth Walking Track and Lookout and the Cathedral and Arch Walking Track
- Burbie Camp, Danu Camp and Gunneemooroo Camp

John Renshaw Parkway may be impacted by smoke, depending on wind conditions. Motorists are advised to take care and drive to conditions. People vulnerable to smoke are encouraged to remain indoors and keep their doors and windows closed to reduce exposure.
Hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect parks, neighbours and communities from future bushfires.
This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
All burns around the state are coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service to ensure the impact on the community is assessed at a regional level.
