Two men have been extradited from Queensland after being arrested on NSW over alleged fraud and traffic offences in northern NSW.
Officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District Target Action Group (TAG) along with detectives commenced an investigation into the theft of motor vehicles and subsequent fraud offences in the Tweed Heads region since December.
A number of the stolen vehicles were allegedly involved in pursuits with police during this time.
In another incident, officers were involved in a struggle with a man in Kingscliff on Tuesday (14 January 2020), after allegedly sighting a firearm in his vehicle and attempting to retrieve it. The driver fled, striking a senior constable.
Following extensive inquiries and with the assistance of Queensland Police, investigators attended a Mermaid Beach motel yesterday (Friday 17 January 2020), and arrested four people, including two men – aged 26 and 29 – wanted on NSW arrest warrants.
The men appeared at the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday (Saturday 18 January 2020), in relation to the outstanding NSW warrants.
NSW Police Force detectives from the Tweed/Byron Police District applied for and were granted their extradition to NSW.
The men were escorted to Tweed Heads Police Station where the outstanding arrest warrants were executed for traffic and property offences.
The older man was also charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, and driver use mobile phone when not permitted
Both men appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court and were refused bail to appear in the same court tomorrow (Monday 20 January 2020).
