5 July 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR is pleased to announce a new partnership with Princeton in Asia through which a Princeton in Asia intern will work at the UNITAR Hiroshima Office as a Leadership and Inclusion Trainee over the US summer. Princeton in Asia interns are generally undergraduate students. The partnership is similar to UNITAR’s ongoing partnership with the Oberlin Shansi Fellowship, where a fellow works at UNITAR for two years.

Founded in 1898, Princeton in Asia is an independent non-profit organization affiliated with Princeton University. Through fellowships and internships with Asian host organizations like UNITAR that contribute to important global issues at the local level, Princeton in Asia aims to contribute to a world where individuals share a mutual appreciation and respect for a diversity of cultures and perspectives, as well as cultivate lifelong bridges to Asia.

M.B. Dillon, Executive Director of Princeton in Asia, welcomed the new partnership:

“For 125 years, Princeton in Asia (PiA) has fostered a mutual appreciation and cross-cultural understanding between the United States and Asia through immersive work fellowships and internships in host organizations and communities. We are pleased to formalize our partnership this year with the launch of a PiA summer internship hosted by UNITAR. The PiA summer intern will serve as a Leadership and Inclusion Trainee, engaging diverse populations in Japan and in beneficiary countries to disseminate the results and impacts of UNITAR activities. PiA looks forward to our continued collaboration as both of our organizations work to support young people in building a better future.”

Mihoko Kumamoto, Director of the UNITAR Division for Prosperity, looked forward to the collaboration with Princeton in Asia:

“We are excited to collaborate with Princeton in Asia, a programme that has been building bridges to Asia for over a century. UNITAR looks forward to hosting PiA fellows and joining them to continue our missions into the next century.”

Together, UNITAR and Princeton in Asia aim to provide new learning opportunities for talented, young fellows, who will use these experiences to contribute to the missions of the two organizations.
